In many organizations a lot of attention is paid to the reduction of set up times,
regardless whether or not the resource is a constraint. Let's have a look again to the basic model of the JN-factory.
Let's assume we have implemented some changes. The result of those changes is that we are now
able to do the set up resource B in just 20' in stead of the 180' before.
What are then the consequence of reducing set up of B to 20'?
| Throughput |
Will it increase the output of the factory ? Or, will we be able to sell one product more by the
set up reduction ? No, because the constraint did not change ! |
Will the changes increase Throughput?
NO, the changes will not increase Throughput.
|
| Inventory |
Did the changes directly decrease Inventory ? Did the reduction in set up time reduce the WIP?
Probably not. May be the buffersize? |
| Operating Expenses |
Did the Operating Expenses increase ?
Probably.

Can you think of any other merits of reducing the batchsizes on NON Constraints?
What about effect on buffersizes?
